Deep Cuts and Scratches:

Technique:
  • Using Cine wax, scrape some onto back of hand and warm before applying to skin in thin layers where the intended cut is to be placed.
  • Apply with palette knife in order to smooth out edges and stop any harsh lines on the wound.
  • Add moisturiser to blend out edges of cine wax.
  • Continue to layer the cine wax until the wound is at the intended height and thickness.
  • Make the cut in the cine wax using the original palette knife gently.
  • Apply latex or sealer to keep the cine wax from moving around on the skin and set it into place. Use cotton buds to dip into latex and then apply a thin layer over 'wound' and skin.
  • Wait to dry or use a cool hair dryer as to not melt the wax.
  • Use a stippling brush to cover the fake wound with foundation, vary the foundation colours in order to show all the different colours in skin and make the wound seem more natural.
  • Using your supra colour palette, stipple colours such as red, orange and yellow around the wound to create a sore, reddened look.
  • use a bobby pin to fill the fake wound with wound filler and create a ripped and fleshy texture. ( I also added black supra colour to the base of the would to create a deeper coloured effect. )
  • use a thin paintbrush to add fake blood to the wound and create a new, glistening shine to it.
  • splash blood around the wound by flicking a paintbrush or use a black corse sponge with fake blood applied to create scratch marks around the wound by dragging the sponge quickly across the skin.
  • Can also add fake pus to the wound to give the illusion of deep infection.

Bruises:

Technique:
  • Follow an image of a real black eye for guidance.
  • Using a 'bruise wheel', and small blending brushes, apply darker colours to the inner corner of the eye and follow the natural shape of the eye socket.
  • Use lighter purple, red and yellow tones on outer parts.
  • Red eye pencil can be applied to the waterline to make the eye look sore.
  • Red eye drops can be squeezed into the eye to make it look bloodshot.
  • Dab on Vaseline if the bruise looks a little matte, to add a bit of shine.

Evaluation: I really enjoyed this practical and learnt some useful techniques to aid in the development of my project. I didn't have time to create a scar but we have been told we will resist these types of wounds in a few weeks for practice. I think that my black eye makeup has a very realistic look to it and found it very easy to create and master. However the cut I created was a little more of a struggle as I wanted to have a deep cut I found it hard to build up the cinewax while also making sure that the edges were smoothed out and looked like they blended into the skin. If I could do something differently on the cut for next time I would make sure the layers of cine wax were thinner in order to create a more blended effect so that the cut will be perceived as more naturalistic. I also would have added the sore redness that is around the cut before i applied the blood in order to smudge less of the makeup surrounding the makeup wound. Overall I think these techniques will come in handy in the future as my project is all about the transition that dorian makes from the beautiful, ageless young man that he was to the corrupt and gruesome painting that he had become. Using cuts to show the skin changing form and taking on the shape of a malevolent creature could involve some tears in the skin.
