During the victorian era taking pride in your appearance was something that most men and women would do. The idea of personal hygiene at this time was beginning to become a more common occurrence, with men and women having sleek and together hair do's at every public appearance. People washed their hair on a much more regular basis, hair appears shinier, coconut oils and almond oils were used to keep the hair smelling nice and looking sleek. Women were also known to grown out their hair and wear it in long plaits.
Women's Hair and makeup styles:
Women’s facial looks was much more about skincare and the careful application of creams. Names of note in the cosmetic industry in this era included Madame Rachel and Harriet Hubbard Ayer. The House of Cyclax [ which sounds more like a disease ] was a well known purveyor of ladies cosmetics and perfumes on London’s Bond Street. But it was all a bit shady those days, with ladies of society sneaking in back doors for private consultations. The official opinion of women was to frown upon the use of face paint as it was immediately associated with prostitutes and actresses. The definitive Victorian look was that of the brunette. Cosmetics, which mostly consisted of rouges were generally designed
to compliment the brunette look. There were no lipsticks, but various lip dyes and tinctures could be bought.

Women's fashion consisted of high necked dresses with looser corsets than in the Elizabethan era. The clothes were a lot more functional and freeing which made it easier for women to move about and not just sit around leisurely.
