Burns.

Products Used:

  • Gelatine ( Can be coloured with supra colour, can add glitter, can go in hair because it can wash away with hot water.)
  • Witch-hazel
  • Kryolan Supra-colour palette
  • Kryolan blush palette
  • Powder
  • Fake blood
  • Cleanser

Equipment:

  • Spatula/palette knife
  • Cotton buds
  • Hairdryer
  • Microwave (to melt gelatine)
  • Stippling brushes, large and small.
  • Hair pins.

Health and safety:
  • Test gelatine on self first to check it's not too hot
  • Test hairdryer on self first to check it's not too hot
  • Clean and tidy work space
  • Cover client to protect clothes, etc.
  • Can be peeled off or washed off with warm water

Technique:
  • Consider whether the wound will be a 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree burn and look photographs of these for authentic research to make it easier to replicate.
    • 1st degree = sunburn
    • 2nd degree = boiling water or acid
    • 3rd degree = fire damage
  • Melt a small amount of gelatine in the microwave. Wait for it to cool before applying - test on own skin first to make sure it is not too hot for your client.
  • Apply with a spatula/palette knife - use thin layers in order to create smooth edges, layer up as you like to create larger, thicker or blistered burns.
  • Pull at gelatine, move it around and rip parts to create texture and what will look like open sores when look is complete.
  • Use witch-hazel on a cotton bud to blend edges or the gelatine away to look more realistic.
  • Dry with a cool hairdryer - not hot as it will melt the gelatine again. Gelatine will still be tacky!
  • Dab on powder - don't rub - to set gelatine and make it blend with skin in order to feel and look more flesh-like.
  • Stipple blush colours on to make surrounding area look sore and red.
  • Use fake blood on hair pins to add small lesions, supra-colour, and any other products (e.g. pus) to make the area look burnt and sore.
I decided to create a second degree burn:

G E L E T I N E   A P P L I C A T I O N.

D R I E D    G E L E T I N E.

 W I T C H   H A Z E L.

 P O W D E R.

 L I G H T    S U P R A  C O L O U R I N G.

 A D D I N G   D E T A I L  W I T H  D A R K E R  C O L O U R S.

 A D D I N G   F A K E   B L O O D.

 F I N A L   O U T C O M E.

I really enjoyed working with gelatine, it was a product i would've never thought to have worked with and I learnt a lot in this lesson. I think that my first try at completing a burn was very successful and i would not change much other than maybe blending out the edges slightly.
